OUR CLUB
A BRIEF HISTORY OF AFC STOCKPORT:
AFC Stockport was established on September 7th, 2003, by our founder and chairman, Lee Humphries.
The club began through the sports chain Decathlon, where Lee started a team that played friendly kick-arounds against other retailers including NEXT, Woolworths, TK Maxx, Topman and many
others. What started as a simple group of people enjoying football together would eventually grow into something much bigger.
At the start of 2008, Lee spoke with a few of the regular players about the possibility of entering a competitive Sunday League. With most of the players working Saturdays at Decathlon, Sunday
football seemed the natural next step. The idea was not met with huge confidence, as several players felt the team may not be good enough to compete against established football clubs.
Despite those doubts, Lee contacted the Stockport District Sunday Football League, and AFC Stockport were accepted for the start of the 2008/09 campaign.
That same summer, a chance meeting between Lee and Market Place (Europe) Ltd CEO, Allan Hartwell, led to Market Place sponsoring the team for their first competitive season. That support
has continued every season since, and Market Place remain the current First Team sponsor to this day.
In their first ever competitive league campaign, AFC Stockport went on to win Division Four and also reached a semi-final, defeating higher-league opposition along the way. AFC Stockport had
arrived, and the journey into competitive football had officially begun.
Over the following seasons, the club continued to compete strongly. More players became interested in what AFC Stockport was all about, and before long the club had grown to include a
second and third team. From there, AFC Stockport expanded into Saturday football and competitive women’s football.
Our Lionesses have been part of the club since 2006 and began their competitive 11-a-side journey in 2010. As the women’s section continued to develop, the club explored new opportunities
and created two midweek teams for women players.
Men’s Vets football came later. After Lee spent time with a group in Warrington to see how they ran their Vets setup, he decided he wanted to bring that same opportunity to AFC Stockport. In
2022, the club created its first ever Vets team. Since then, the Vets section has grown to include two Over-35s teams and one Over-45s team.
Most recently, Lee noticed that several players had children of a similar age. From that came the idea of creating a junior team for the children of the parents. In 2023, the Little Stars were
formed, who have since become the Avengers team. Since that first step into junior football, AFC Stockport has grown to provide football for three junior teams — something that was never part
of the original plan for an adult club. From that opening day in 2023, two of the original junior players, Finley and Oscar, are still proudly part of the club.
It has been an eventful journey since day one. There have been highs, lows, unforgettable moments, and tearful disappointments. But one thing AFC Stockport has always stood for is standards
and expectations, from the First Team all the way down to the Junior Teams.
The club is structured, committed, and guided by a committee that continues to direct AFC Stockport in the right way. What began as a friendly kick-around has grown into a football club with
history, pride, and a real future.
We are AFC Stockport.
AFC Since 2003.
It must be love!
